Energy & Utilities
Remember making potato clocks? Pumping up water powered rocket toys (that never seemed to work) or racing rubber band cars? Imagine doing that but on a much larger scale. You could be in charge of delivering electricity to thousands of homes, helping to construct huge hydroelectric dams or developing the latest renewable energy to power cars. The energy and utilities industry is one of the most important in the world and offers a vast range of exciting careers.
The energy and utilities industry is all about oil, gas, coal, petroleum, solar power, wind farms and everything else which provides the UK with energy. It also handles water, sewage systems and waste management. Without the utilities industry, the UK would stink to high heaven and we’d all be wallowing around in muck.
Without the energy industry, we’d have to go everywhere on foot (what? walk?) and there’d no heating or electricity in our homes. Just think, nothing to power our electric carving knives, hair crimpers or teas-maids (look it up, Loose Women are a fan). So every time you fire up your electric carving knife, you have the energy and utilities sector to thank.
Careers in the energy sector don’t have to be dangerous; it isn’t all about battling leaky dams, collapsing mines, exploding oil rigs and melting nuclear reactors (touch wood). There are a huge number of research and development jobs in the scientific side of energy careers with no North Sea oil rig in sight.
There has also been a huge rise in the development of renewable energy careers and even the major oil companies are getting in on the act. With increasing environmental concerns across the world, the energy and utilities industry is becoming one of the most innovative and adaptable sectors to work in.
A huge range of career paths are available within the energy and utilities sector: ranging from energy engineering roles, to sales and customer services positions. There are: power and utilities engineers, geoscientists, mining and mineral extraction experts, metallurgists, biomedical engineers…the list goes on.
Not only that, but there is also an abundance of management, finance, administration and I.T. careers available within energy and utilities companies. Every single role requires energetic people to help provide the UK with all the energy and water it needs. Go on, do Britain proud!
